Certified Voluntary Work

Title of the Practice: Certified Voluntary Work (CVW)

Overview:

Certified Voluntary Work (CVW) was introduced as part of the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) curriculum in the academic year 2011-12. The primary objective of this initiative is to instill a service-oriented mindset among students and encourage them to contribute positively to society. Students earn credits and grades based on their participation each semester, fostering a sense of self-worth and respect.

Motto: “We Serve, We Gain”

Objectives:

  • To promote community service, enhancing overall wellbeing and the quality of education.
  • To develop excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • To educate individuals on good citizenship and foster a sense of nationalism.
  • To raise awareness about literacy programs.
  • To uphold the belief that service to mankind is service to God.
  • To engage in voluntary work while earning credits for academic courses.

Practice:

Certified Voluntary Work encompasses various activities, including:

  • Supervision of college campus facilities (classrooms, restrooms, library).
  • Adult literacy programs in underserved areas.
  • Eradication of child labor and school enrollment initiatives.
  • Volunteering at old age homes and hospitals.
  • Assistance at the student cooperative canteen.

Total Working Hours:

  • Each semester: 40 hours
  • Cumulative total for six semesters: 240 hours

Semester-wise Work Allotment:

  • Semester I: Campus supervision, classroom, restroom, and hostel oversight.
  • Semester II: Library maintenance and cooperative canteen assistance.
  • Semester III: Child labor eradication and support for old age homes.
  • Semester IV: Hospital volunteering and adult literacy in slums.
  • Semester V: Service at orphanages.
  • Semester VI: Teaching students at government schools.

Challenges Faced:

  • Time Management: Limited availability during daytime makes hospital volunteering particularly challenging.
  • Scheduling Conflicts: Coordination between student and school schedules can hinder effective interaction and engagement.
  • Parental Concerns: Restrictions on volunteering during weekends and holidays can limit participation.

Despite these challenges, students develop empathy and a deeper understanding of the needs of others, particularly patients in hospitals.

Evidence of Success:

  • Campus Supervision: Improved interaction among students and effective problem-solving on campus.
  • Library Maintenance: Enhanced knowledge through exposure to new literature and systematic organization of resources.
  • Teaching Experience: Development of skills in engaging with children and addressing their needs.
  • Hospital Volunteering: Cultivated patience and confidence in dealing with patients, fostering gratitude for healthcare professionals.
  • Old Age Home Engagement: Deepened compassion and wisdom through interactions with the elderly.
  • Work at Orphanages: Strengthened ethical values and awareness of the challenges faced by orphans, contributing to personal growth.
